When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, Satan said that they would not die.  Much like a modern politician, there was an element of truth, but a big lie.  They did die and death has taken control of every person.

Mankind became dead in spirit, mind, and body.  Humanity voluntarily broke relationship with God.  The human spirit, which had been created to be in perfect communion with the Spirit of God, became separated from God and dead. The human mind, the soul, which could never work properly without an intimate connection to God through the human spirit, died, became separated from God by an independent and rebellious nature. The mind became worthless, reprobate, evil, and corrupt.  The human body became subject to sickness, pain, and the inevitable separation of spirit and soul from body in death.
